Helen Rippin BSC RVN NCert A+CC
I joined Riverside in 2007 after training and working in a spinal and orthopaedic referral practice. I wanted to join Riverside as I have known the practice from a child. Our family pets always came here, and throughout my teenage years I came regularly on work experience. After working here for 10 years, I was very proud to be asked to become a shareholder and director in the practice
What I love about being a veterinary nurse is seeing the patients go home feeling better - I love to see the patients and owners greeting each other when they get to go home. I particularly enjoy surgical nursing and anaesthesia and I completed a Nursing Certificate in anaesthesia and critical care nursing a couple of years after I qualified.
As a Clinical Coach I am also involved in training our student nurses, and I am an examiner for veterinary nursing practical exams at Usk College. This is not something I ever saw myself doing when I was younger, but I now find working with the students very rewarding.
Outside of work I enjoy building and fixing things, and this makes me "Mrs Fixit" at work too. Computers in particular seem to like me and will start to work again when I come near them! People are usually surprised to know that I trained in motor mechanics and worked in a local garage for a while before becoming a nurse. My local community is very important to me and having some IT training, I also build websites for several local community groups I am involved in, as well as holding a seat on my local community council.
